Knowing Your Fabric & How to Care for Them

Fabric sofas are known to be the most ideal when it comes to living in comfort on our sunny and very humid island. A sofa in a high-traffic area will need a sturdy, strong and easy-to-clean fabric. Certainly, you will want to invest on a quality fabric for a beautiful showpiece in the living room.

So, what do you look for in a fabric sofa? Comfort, breathability, colour options, easy maintenance, stain resistant, durability or maybe, just all of the above. Then comes the big question: Should you go for the cotton, linen or polyester sofa cover?

We know too well that choosing the right fabric for your sofa can be daunting when given too many options. No worries, by the time you are done reading this post, you will be ready to select the best fabric for your favourite sofa and care for it. It is finally time to live in style and comfort!

Common Types of Fibres:

 Cotton (Natural Fibre):

Cotton is absorbent, breathable and soft. It is almost the perfect fabric for farming a couch potato, only if you do not mind the wrinkles or frequent ironing. Cotton may be washed in water at any temperature but it is likely to stretch or shrink with wash (Yikes, a huge no-no for washable removable covers that we have here at etch&bolts). While the fibres hold dye incredibly well to achieve deeper colour, the dye will fade over time with excessive sunlight. Do keep them away from areas with direct sunlight to prolong their lifespan!

Linen (Natural Fibre):

Linen, known for its coolness, lustre and strength, was once considered suitable only for the royalty. Similar to cotton, it is absorbent and breathable. However, it requires high maintenance (you know, royal life). Linen is more difficult to iron than other fabric and it wrinkles easily. Furthermore, it is best to send your covers for professional cleaning to maintain its charm. If you do not mind the extra work involved to keep it looking fresh and crisp, linen may be the perfect fabric for Singapore’s weather.

Polyester (Synthetic Fibre):

If you are looking for a sofa cover that looks the same even after years of heavy usage and sunlight exposure, polyester fabric is definitely the fabric you are looking for. The man-made fibre is the most resistant to wrinkles resulting in a tidy-looking sofa all year round with minimal effort. However, unlike cotton or linen, polyester is not as absorbent or breathable. Not the most ideal in humid Singapore but it is definitely going to buy you time to clean up liquid spills and stains. And if it gets too dirty, just throw it into the washing machine to give it a quick spin. Polyester covers are excellent for homes with not-so-tidy little humans and pets!

So, what do we do to get the best of natural and synthetic fibre? We mix them to create blends!

Cotton/Polyester Blend & Linen/Polyester Blend:

This is literally, the best of both worlds. Developers take the best qualities of both cotton/linen and polyester, weave them together and ta-dah, an invincible fabric (well, almost)! Comfortable, breathable yet durable and wrinkle-free! It is a good all-around choice for sofa fabric.

How etch&bolts Curate Quality Fabric for Your Sofa:

Here at etch&bolts, we understand the needs of an average household. We know that the last thing our customers want is a high maintenance sofa. Offering a wide range of polyester and polyester blends in a spectrum of colours, we want our customers to be comfortable and happy while maintaining a fuss-free lifestyle. Furthermore, our fabric sofas are thoughtfully built with removable covers that you can easily clean with your washing machine (depending on the fabric you choose).

Fabric Care (or How to Lead a Fuss-Free Lifestyle):

  1. Vacuum regularly with the upholstery attachment of a vacuum cleaner to prevent dust and dirt from wearing out the upholstery
  2. Where possible, place upholstered pieces away from direct sunlight so as to minimize fading
  3. For removable upholstery, most of them can be machine-washed without much worry – just place them in a laundry net, and wash different colours separately
  4. In the event of stains, do treat them promptly with before laundering to prevent them from setting in
  5. Light stains: Blot stain lightly with a mixture of dish soap and cool water, taking care not to rub at the stain. Rinse sponge with water to blot out excess soap mixture. Press dry with a dry cloth or paper towels.
  6. Heavy stains: Test out a recommended stain remover from a DIY store at a discrete spot on the upholstery, before applying them on the actual stain. Dab gently with a damp cloth.
